Friday, February 2, 2007, is National Wear Red Day
This is a day when Americans nationwide will take women's health to heart by wearing red to show their support for women's heart disease awareness. The Heart Truthis: "Heart Disease Doesn't Care What You Wear—It's the #1 Killer of Women." The statistics are alarming:
- Heart disease is the #1 killer of women.
- One in 3 women dies of heart disease; 1 in 30 dies of breast cancer.
- About 3 million American women have had a heart attack.
- Nearly two-thirds of America women who die suddenly of a heart attack had no prior symptoms.
- Two-thirds of American women who have had a heart attack don't make a full recovery.
The good news is that both men and women can lower their risk of heart disease by as much as 82 percent by leading a healthy lifestyle. Join the national awareness movement by wearing red on February 2, and encourage your family, friends, and coworkers to do the same. Anyone can participate by showing off a favorite red dress, shirt, or tie.
February has long been considered Heart Health Month because of Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, and all the connections between hearts and love. In 2004, several women's heart health efforts, including the American Heart Association's National Wear Red Day and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute's Heart Truth campaign were combined under the slogan "Go Red for Women." The focus changed from awareness to action, under the simple proposition that by loving your own heart, you can save it.
